The author has also posted on his web site a set of solutions for every problem, and each of the problems is thoroughly worked out with clear explanations. This is a HUGE plus for anyone picking up this book for self-study.
This book offers complete discussion to an electromagnetism or a vector calculus class (or as a review after having taken such a class). Although the writing is clear enough that one could probably get a lot even without having had a vector calculus class, ideally one would have had at least some minimal exposure to vector calculus. It's not that you need to be an expert in vector calculus; all the concepts are explained very well in the book and the actual calculus you need for solving the problems is minimal, but in my mind the book will work best for those with some exposure to vector calculus.

The most obvious change is in the space devoted to the theory of inhomogeneous fluids, an area in which considerable progress has been made since 1986. Other major additions are sections on the properties of supercooled liquids, which include a discussion of the mode-coupling theory of the kinetic glass transition, on theories of condensation and freezing and on the electric double layer.
To make way for this and other new material, some sections from the second edition have either been reduced in length or omitted altogether. In particular, we no longer see a need to include a complete chapter on molecular simulation, the publication of several excellent texts on the subject having filled what was previously a serious gap in the literature.
There is up-to-date presentation of modern theories of liquid-vapour coexistence and criticality with areas of considerable present and future interest such as super-cooled liquids and the glass transition. This text also describes the area of liquid metals, which has grown into a mature subject area, now presented as part of the chapter ionic liquids.
