Introduction to Solid State Physics 8th Edition, Kittel
Introduction to Solid State Physics 8th Edition PDF Download Ebook. Charles Kittel uses the simplifications made possible by the wide availability of computer technology. Searches using keywords on a search engine (such as Google) easily generate many fresh and useful references.
This text has been the standard solid state physics text for physics students. The author's goal from the beginning has been to write a book that is accessible to undergraduates and consistently teachable. The emphasis in the book has always been on physics rather than formal mathematics. With each new edition, the author has attempted to add important new developments in the field without sacrificing the book's accessibility and teachability.
A very important chapter on nanophysics has been written by an active worker in the field. This field is the liveliest addition to solid state science during the past ten years. The crystallographic notation conforms with current usage in physics. Important equations in the body of the text are repeated in SI and CGS-Gaussian units, where these differ.
Charles Kittel did his undergraduate work in physics at M.I.T and at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He worked in the solid state group at Bell Laboratories, along with Bardeen and Shockley, leaving to start the theoretical solid state physics group at Berkeley in 1951. His research has been largely in magnetism and in semiconductors.
In magnetism he developed the theories of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic resonance and the theory of single ferromagnetic domains, and extended the Bloch theory of magnons. In semiconductor physics he participated in the first cyclotron and plasma resonance experiments and extended the results to the theory of impurity states and to electron-hole drops.

Magnetism in Condensed Matter by Stephen Blundell
Magnetism in Condensed Matter PDF Download Ebook. Stephen Blundell describes the modern theory of the magnetic properties of solids. Starting from fundamental principles, this copiously illustrated volume outlines the theory of magnetic behaviour, describes experimental techniques, and discusses current research topics. The book is intended for final year undergraduate students and graduate students in the physical sciences.
Written for undergraduates who have knowledge of basic quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and some atomic physics, this clearly organized text introduces magnetism in condensed matter systems. The chapters are laid out with tables, annotation, and some of the figures incorporated into the wide outside margins. Lists of reading and exercises conclude each chapter but the last, which is devoted to new topics and unanswered problems in the field.
This book has grown out of a course of lectures given to third and fourth year undergraduates at Oxford University who have chosen a condensed matter physics option. There was an obvious need for a text which treated the fundamentals but also provided background material and additional topics which could not be covered in the lectures. The aim was to produce a book which presented the subject as a coherent whole, provided useful and interesting source material, and might be fun to read.
The book also forms part of the Oxford Master Series in Condensed Matter Physics; the other volumes of the series cover electronic properties, optical properties, superconductivity, structure and soft condensed matter. The prerequisites for this book are knowledge of basic quantum mechanics and electromagnetism and a familiarity with some results from atomic physics. These are summarized in appendices for easy access for the reader and to present a standardized notation.
Author describes some of the subtle and complex effects which can occur when competing magnetic interactions are present and/or the system has a reduced dimensionality. These topics are the subject of intense research activity and there are many outstanding questions which remain to be resolved. Throughout the text, author discusses properties and applications to demonstrate the implications of all these ideas for real materials, including ferrites, permanent magnets and also the physics behind various magneto-optical and magnetoresistance effects which have become of enormous technological importance in recent years.
This is a book for physicists and therefore the emphasis is on the clear physical principles of quantum mechanics, symmetry, and electromagnetism which underlie the whole field. However this is not just a 'theory book' but attempts to relate the subject to real measurements and experimental techniques which are currently used by experimental physicists and to bridge the gulf between the principles of elementary undergraduate physics and the topics of current research interest.

A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations, Daniel Fleisch
A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations PDF Download Ebook. Daniel Fleisch shows how Maxwell's equations may be combined to produce the wave equation, the basis for the electromagnetic theory of light. This book is a wonderful resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetism and electromagnetics.
Gauss's law for electric fields, Gauss's law for magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law are four of the most influential equations in science. In this guide for students, each equation is the subject of an entire chapter, with detailed, plain-language explanations of the physical meaning of each symbol in the equation, for both the integral and differential forms.
A website hosted by the author at www.cambridge.org/9780521701471 contains interactive solutions to every problem in the text as well as audio podcasts to walk students through each chapter. This text provides a thorough overview of Maxwell's equations with stunning clarity. Each equation is broken down into component parts, and the physical significance of each part is thoroughly explained.
Also of note are the problem sets at the end of each chapter. The problems work very well to reinforce the concepts from each chapter. They are not overly difficult or too simplistic. They are geared specifically at reinforcing concepts. The author has also posted on his web site a set of solutions for every problem, and each of the problems is thoroughly worked out with clear explanations. This is a HUGE plus for anyone picking up this book for self-study.
This book offers complete discussion to an electromagnetism or a vector calculus class (or as a review after having taken such a class). Although the writing is clear enough that one could probably get a lot even without having had a vector calculus class, ideally one would have had at least some minimal exposure to vector calculus. It's not that you need to be an expert in vector calculus; all the concepts are explained very well in the book and the actual calculus you need for solving the problems is minimal, but in my mind the book will work best for those with some exposure to vector calculus.
