Modern Cosmology by Scott Dodelson

Modern Cosmology PDF Download Ebook. Scott Dodelson offers foundations, calculations, and interpretations which illuminate current thinking in cosmology. This text covers the major advances in cosmology over the past decade with over 100 unique, pedagogical figures.

This text begins with an introduction to the smooth, homogeneous universe described by a Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric, including careful treatments of dark energy, big bang nucleosynthesis, recombination, and dark matter. From this starting point, the reader is introduced to perturbations about an FRW universe: their evolution with the Einstein-Boltzmann equations, their generation by primordial inflation, and their observational consequences.

These consequences include the anisotropy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) featuring acoustic peaks and polarization, the matter power spectrum with baryonic wiggles, and their detection via photometric galaxy surveys, redshift distortions, cluster abundances, and weak lensing. The book concludes with a long chapter on data analysis.

The topics also explain in detail the structure of the acoustic peaks in the CMB, the E/B decomposition in polarization which may allow for detection of primordial gravity waves, and the modern analysis techniques used on increasingly large cosmological data sets. Readers will gain the tools needed to work in cosmology and learn how modern observations are rapidly revolutionizing our picture of the universe.

Introduction to Cosmology by Barbara Ryden

Introduction to Cosmology PDF Download Ebook. Barbara Ryden provides a rare combination of a solid foundation of the core physical concepts of cosmology and the most recent astronomical observations. The book is designed for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students and assumes no prior knowledge of general relativity.

An emphasis is placed on developing the readers' physical insight rather than losing them with complex math. An approachable writing style and wealth of fresh and imaginative analogies from "everyday" physics are used to make the concepts of cosmology more accessible.

The book is unique in that it not only includes recent major developments in cosmology, like the cosmological constant and accelerating universe, but also anticipates key developments expected in the next few years, such as detailed results on the cosmic microwave background. It endeavors to use the scientific method to understand the origin, evolution and ultimate fate of the entire Universe.

Like any field of science, cosmology involves the formation of theories or hypotheses about the universe which make specific predictions for phenomena that can be tested with observations. Depending on the outcome of the observations, the theories will need to be abandoned, revised or extended to accommodate the data. The prevailing theory about the origin and evolution of our Universe is the so-called Big Bang theory.

An Introduction to Modern Cosmology 2e, Andrew Liddle

An Introduction to Modern Cosmology 2nd Edition PDF Download Ebook. Andrew Liddle offers accessible introduction to this exciting and dynamic subject. This book adopts an approach grounded in physics rather than mathematics. It includes worked examples and student problems, along with hints for solving them and the numerical answers.

Many reviewers have commented that this is one of the best 'introductory undergraduate level' texts on the subject and they would all welcome a Second Edition. It is an accessible account of modern cosmological ideas. The Big Bang Cosmology is explored, looking at its observational successes in explaining the expansion and age of the universe, the existence and properties of the cosmic microwave background, and the origin of the light elements in the universe.

Properties of the very early universe are also covered, including the motivation for the theory known as cosmological inflation. The Second Edition includes additional material on observational cosmology and structure formation. The structure of the book is a central 'spine', the main chapters from one to fifteen, which provide a self-contained introduction to modem cosmology more or less reproducing the coverage of my Sussex course.

In addition there are five Advanced Topic chapters, each with prerequisites, which can be added to extend the course as desired. Ordinarily the best time to tackle those Advanced Topics is immediately aftertheir prerequisites have been attained, though they could also be included at any later stage.

Cosmology by Steven Weinberg

Cosmology PDF Download Ebook. Steven Weinberg offers detailed, self-contained, and comprehensive treatment that it gives to the ideas and formulas that are used and tested in modern cosmological research. It divides into two parts, each of which provides enough material for a one-semester graduate course.

The first part deals chiefly with the isotropic and homogeneous average universe; the second part concentrates on the departures from the average universe. Throughout the book the author presents detailed analytic calculations of cosmological phenomena, rather than just report results obtained elsewhere by numerical computation.

The book is up to date, and gives detailed accounts of topics such as recombination, microwave background polarization, leptogenesis, gravitational lensing, structure formation, and multifield inflation, that are usually treated superficially if at all in treatises on cosmology. Copious references to current research literature are supplied.

Appendices include a brief introduction to general relativity, and a detailed derivation of the Boltzmann equation for photons and neutrinos used in calculations of cosmological evolution. Also provided is an assortment of problems. This book tackles the main events of today's cosmology: cosmic acceleration observed with supernovae, the exquisite structure of the cosmic microwave background, and the evidence for dark matter.

Author pays close attention to the historical development and summarizes the observations with care. He brings deep knowledge of the underlying physics and weaves these threads together into a rich text that will be of great value to astronomers and physicists.

The first half of this book is a wonderful introduction to cosmology, suitable for a graduate course or for someone coming into the field from a neighboring region of the scientific forest. The second half is an original development of the theory for the growth of inhomogeneities in the Universe. Everyone who works on cosmology will find something to learn in this book.

Physical Foundations of Cosmology by Viatcheslav Mukhanov

Physical Foundations of Cosmology PDF Download Ebook. Viatcheslav Mukhanov takes an original approach to explain the basis of modern cosmology and show where the theoretical results come from. The book is divided into two parts; the first section deals with the homogeneous and isotropic model of the Universe, the second part discusses how inhomogeneities can explain its structure.

Established material such as the inflation and quantum cosmological perturbation are presented in great detail. The book covers established material as well as bringing the reader to the frontiers of current cosmological research by the discussion of more speculative ideas. An ideal textbook for advanced students of physics and astrophysics, all of the necessary back ground material is included in every chapter and no prior knowledge of general relativity and quantum field theory is assumed.

Mukhanov has written an excellent text in cosmology for students who have a good understanding of theoretical physics at the undergraduate level. This book contains a thorough and modern introduction to physical cosmology. There is much in this book for experts as well as serious students of cosmology. Anyone mastering the second part of it will have a firm foundation for frontier research in theoretical cosmology.

Balanced and thorough discussions of major topics are effective and to-the-point with rigor carefully incorporated as appropriate. A strong emphasis is placed on the connections between different fields of astrophysics. The conceptual explanations in this textbook are mostly pretty good, and it has lots of supplementary facts and even some cute trivia about topics in astronomy in the footnotes. Where it does less well is in mathematical proof and explanation.

I used this book in conjunction with Carroll and Ostlie in my beginning astrophysics course, and together they explained concepts with great mathematical clarity AND conceptual clarity. Individually, neither book does both those things well. The chapters about planetary science are way more detailed and understandable than the chapters about stellar evolution, galaxies, and cosmology.
